Afia Asamoah
Co-founder, Head of Legal and People
Afia Asamoah is a strategic technology leader and senior executive with nearly 20 years of experience guiding companies at the convergence of technology and healthcare, during dynamic periods of innovation and transformation. Throughout her career, Afia has worked at this intersection, focused on using technology to deliver and achieve equitable healthcare.
In 2021, she co-founded Waymark to focus on improving care delivery to people with Medicaid benefits, combining her interests in using technology to improve and better enable health care delivery to underserved and lower income populations. Prior to Waymark, Afia spent 8 years at Google, shaping Google’s entry into the healthcare space, including the formation of a standalone Alphabet healthcare company, Verily Life Sciences. As Head of Legal for Google Health and part of the executive team, she led a global team advising on product roadmap decisions, and strategic plans. Afia also brings a deep understanding of government and regulatory matters, serving as Special Assistant in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner’s Office from 2009 – 2011, creating a new FDA center for regulating tobacco products and leading initiatives to increase technology innovation by biotech and medical devices companies.
She is recognized as a leader and digital health innovator — in 2020, Afia was named “one of the 10 most influential minority healthcare executives” by FierceHealthcare. In 2024, Afia was named as part of the inaugural class of f7 catalysts, awarded to exceptional leaders and operators at high-growth companies that are driving real change in their communities.
Afia received her J.D. from Harvard Law School, Masters of Public Policy from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, and BA from Harvard University. Outside of work, she serves as board director for Lucille Packard Stanford Children’s Hospital, chair of the audit committee, incoming vice chair of the Public Health Institute, a non-profit that focuses on improving health and equity globally, and on the governing board of the Carol Emmott Foundation, dedicated to achieving gender equity in healthcare leadership and governance.
