Award-winning writer and speaker Helene M. Epstein is a healthcare journalist, a national advocate for patients, and a co-designer of patient safety research. Epstein writes and speaks about patient-empowerment, -advocacy and -education, and the role of patients in diagnostic quality and excellence. Patient No More is a healthcare survival resource for patients and caregivers. In 2025, it was the home of the 21-chapter “A Guide to Surviving American Healthcare,” which won an award for impact by the Anthem Awards. Helene frequently speaks to medical conferences and patient groups about patient safety and empowerment. She’s co-authored several medical papers and was the lead author of AHRQ Issue Brief #21, “The Patient’s Role in Diagnostic Safety and Excellence: From Passive Reception Toward Co-Design”. She advises major healthcare systems and works closely with patient advocacy groups like Patients for Patient Safety, the Patient-Partnered Diagnostic Center of Excellence and other nonprofits.
